The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Return
At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Finding His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
