European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
