Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
