The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
